North Las Vegas Landmarks and the Technical Stuff.
North Las Vegas Airport (IATA: VGT, ICAO: KVGT, FAA LID: VGT) is a Clark County Commission-owned public use airfield located 3 miles NW of downtown Las Vegas. It’s commonly referred to as Northtown. It’s a towered airport with three runways as follows, and the elevation is 2,205 ft.
| 7/25 | 5,005 x 75 | Asphalt |
| 12L/30R | 4,199 x 75 | Asphalt |
| 12R/30L | 5,000 x 75 | Asphalt |
All the lights of the city are visible on your way to the North Las Vegas Airport. The change from the miles of no one in most directions to this overflow of humanity is quite dramatic. You could also choose the Henderson Executive Airport, but it’s south of downtown and the designated relief airport for Harry Reid Intl., formerly McCarran. So, as you can imagine, the airspace and the ground traffic can become much more congested than at North Las Vegas Airport.
Special Events
I chose this field because of Super Bowl LVII, but things are going to get pretty busy even here. All Las Vegas FBOs, including Air Elite, at North Las Vegas Airport, have Prior Permission Required in place for February 7-13, 2024 arrivals. There’s also a pretty hefty special event fee for the same dates. However, considering the additional charges, it’s still more economical here than other options in town. If you need tickets for NFL games or Vegas shows, check out Scorebig.com.
There is both Jet A and AVGas on the field, with a self-serve option for AVGas. In addition, a crew car is available. Air Elite has both maintenance and avionics services. They also offer GPUs, baggage handling, catering, detailing, and after-hours security. I’m hoping some of the overcrowding problems were worked out in November during the Formula 1 Heineken Silver Las Vegas Grand Prix.
This airport also offers charter services, and regional airline service is provided by Vision Airlines to the Grand Canyon.
Things To Do
You can find tickets to almost any concert or event happening in Las Vegas at ScoreBig.com. Grab Cirque Du Soleil tickets; they are well worth the price, or you can’t go wrong with NFL tickets.
Night Life not your thing? There are so many adventures that start in Las Vegas, it is hard to choose just one. The sights of the Grand Canyon, Hoover Dam, and the Skywalk are great views almost any time of the year. A tour of Antelope Canyon and Horseshoe Bend is another option.
For something a little more physical, try the Emerald Cave kayak trip.
Transportation
North Las Vegas Airport has several transportation options. Bell Trans, a leading transportation company in Nevada, provides shuttle services from the airport to various destinations. Las Vegas Shuttles is a shared shuttle service that offers rides from North Las Vegas to cities such as Los Angeles and San Diego. Earth Limos is a luxury chauffeured transportation service offering limousines, limo buses, and shuttle buses. In addition, MGM Resorts International offers the MGM Grand Airport Shuttle, a shuttle service that provides transportation to and from the airport, as do many other hotels in town
Places to Stay in Las Vegas
The closest place to stay is the Rancho Budget Suites. I know nothing about this place other than what’s on the website. It says, “can be paid weekly or monthly”, which sometimes doesn’t bode well for the area or the clientele. However, they advertise two pools, laundry facilities, free parking, and security 7 days a week, and it is right across the road from the airport. If you want to avoid staying on the strip, another close hotel is the Santa Fe Station Hotel and Casino.
To be right in the thick of things, the possibilities are almost endless. Choose your budget, then choose your hotel. The Luxor was a very cool experience, but so was Fremont Street at Fitzgerald’s Hotel and Casino on St. Patrick’s Day. If you want to splurge on the Bellagio or the newest luxury hotel in town, the Fontainebleau Las Vegas, you can do so on Expedia.com, where you can compare prices and amenities. Hotels.com is also a pretty convenient source of information.
Places to Wine and Dine
By far, too many to mention. The best value food-wise is buffet-style, and there are some great ones in Vegas. The Bellagio, Caesar’s Palace, the Wynn, and the Wicked Spoon at Cosmo have the best-ranking buffets in town. That doesn’t mean there’s not something great right around the corner from wherever you stay.
If you’re looking for something unusual with wine and cocktails, Blackout is voted one of the best restaurants in Vegas. Don’t go if you’re afraid of the dark.
Add some romance and try the Americana Restaurant or the Eiffel Tower Restaurant. The view from the latter is unsurpassed. If you want to watch the water dance a little closer, make reservations at the Bellagio and ask to be seated outside. Late reservations are best in the summer. You will melt and not enjoy your company in the heat of the day here.
