Chesapeake Regional Airport (CPK, KCPK) is a public non-towered airport located in Chesapeake, VA. It’s maintained and operated by the Chesapeake Airport Authority and has one runway (5/23). The runway is asphalt in good condition and measures 5,500 ft. at an elevation of 19 ft. This field is about 11 miles southwest of downtown Chesapeake.

There is a clean, modern passenger terminal with great facilities and a helpful, friendly staff. It was recommended as a great place to land by a retired GA pilot who now works at the Norfolk International Airport.

Horizon Aviation Services runs the FBO here, and they’ve got most of the bases covered. There’s training, tie-downs, ramp space, and new hangars. The pricing for hangers is not set and is based on aircraft type at this time (May 2025). They are working on getting set prices for the future.

They also have maintenance, parts, pilot supplies, catering, a pilot lounge, and both types of fuel. They are open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. every day of the week, with modified hours as needed for weather. Snacks are provided, but there are no restaurants in the terminal. After-hours call-out is a minimum of $100.

You can also choose flight training, aircraft rental, and maintenance from Epix Aviation. In addition, you can reserve a charter here through Jet Air Charter.

Transportation

There is a courtesy car at this field as well as an Enterprise Rent-A-Car. If Hertz is your agency of choice, I was told they do NOT go to this airport. Both Uber and Lyft get you here and pick you up, but there can be a 20-30 minute wait time.

Where To Stay

For places to stay in Chesapeake, the Hs have it, as in, Hyatt Place, Hampton Inn, Holiday Inn, and Hilton Garden Inn. If you’re looking for an extended stay, the WoodSpring Suites Chesapeake-Norfolk South is a budget-friendly option.

Where To Eat/Drink

The Butcher’s Son comes in first with a beautiful menu. For Caribbean flavor, the Cutlass Grille is the place. The breakfast, brunch, and evening craft beer vote goes to The Egg Bistro in the Greenbrier area of Chesapeake. For a classic Chesapeake crab house, visit the Wicker’s Crab Pot.

The Mexican food ‘choice of the people’ is the Burrito Perdido. For Italian, it’s the Vino Italian Bistro, known for pasta dishes and nice wines. If you’re looking for seafood, the Black Pelican Greenbrier has a different special every day. As you would imagine, the seafood here is fresh and plentiful.

The Barrel Room, Tap It Local, Big Ugly Brewing, and the Lockside Bar and Grill are all decent places to go for a drink. Wild Wing Cafe is for wings, live music, and a beer.

None of these are particularly close to the airport, but then again, nothing is. This is an out-of-the-way airport located in a rural landscape.

Things To Do

If you’re outdoorsy, this is a beautiful place almost all year round. The Chesapeake Arboretum is a 48-acre preserve with trails and a 1830s farmhouse. You can also pick strawberries or pumpkins at Hickory Ridge Farm.

If you’re renting a car, Virginia Beach is less than 30 miles away and full of possibilities. You can visit the Cape Henry Lighthouse, walk the Virginia Beach Boardwalk, or go see the Military Aviation Museum. The Boardwalk is about 3 miles of heaven if you’re a beach person. Have someone take your picture under the King Neptune statue!

You can hop a southbound trolley to visit the Virginia Aquarium and Marine Science Center or ride it all the way north to the historic First Landing State Park.

Take a sunset kayak trip to watch the dolphins or a zipline adventure in the wetlands.

Why Fly Here?

This is a beautiful little city in and of itself, but it’s also close enough to Virginia Beach that you could use it as a home base for a vacation. If you prefer exciting days in Virginia Beach and quiet nights in a more rural setting, this could be just the place for you.

Chesapeake Regional gives GA pilots a smooth, convenient gateway to coastal Virginia. It’s close to the Outer Banks, Hampton Roads, and the quieter Tidewater back roads, with easy approaches and a relaxed, pilot‑friendly feel. The retired pilot from Norfolk was right-this is a sweet little airport!

Safe travels,
