Things To Do

This is a great state for history aficionados. The Capital City Museum is located in a historical hotel and showcases over 200 years of Frankfort’s heritage. The Kentucky Old Governors’ Mansion, built in 1798, is a Federal-style residence that was home to 33 different governors. This building is one of the oldest executive mansions still standing in America. There is also the Liberty Hall Historic Site from the 18th century, and the Sullivan House Visitor Center in Leslie-Morris Park at Fort Hill. Sullivan House will allow you to explore Civil War forts and a log home built in 1810. For a recreated 1850s library, visit the Kentucky Historical Society.
An event held here annually, billed as “The Largest Bourbon Experience,” has recently been named Music Festival of the Year. Four days of outstanding musical talent, plus the opportunity to sip and savor any kind of bourbon you can think of. One of the oldest bourbon distilleries in the U.S., the Buffalo Trace Distillery can be found here. Also, Castle & Key Distillery is in nearby Millville.
For American history buffs, the American frontiersman Daniel Boone has his burial site in a hilltop cemetery with panoramic river views below.
For outdoor recreation, the serene nature preserve at Cove Springs with waterfalls, historic ruins, and walking trails is very nice. Not far from the airfield, the Capital View Park offers peaceful views of the Kentucky River, athletic fields, and trails.
