Laurel Mercantile Co., made famous by HGTV’s Home Town, is a beautiful, general-store-style shop for fans or anyone who loves small-town craftmanship. Also tied to Home Town is the Scotsman General Store and Woodshop, where Ben Napier’s woodworking magic happens.

Veterans Memorial Museum in Laurel honors veterans from multiple eras. Lauren Rogers Museum of Art is Mississippi’s oldest art museum, housed in a 1923 Georgian Revival building, and admission is free.

Landrum’s Homestead & Village is a recreated 1800’s settlement with cabins, shops, and demonstrations. With seasonal events, it’s one of Laurel’s most beloved attractions.

The Hattiesburg direction:

The Lucky Rabbit is a very creative vintage market in downtown Hattiesburg, filling two buildings with nostalgic treasures, retro arcade machines, and photo-worthy setups. In addition, it’s only open on the weekends. Hattiesburg Pocket Museum is in the heart of downtown, and admission is free. It’s a quirky, always‑changing micro‑museum tucked into a downtown alleyway.

The Hattiesburg Zoo and Serengeti Springs, a water attraction connected to the zoo, are great for kids. Surrounding the zoo is Kamper Park, a 40-acre green space filled with tennis courts, playgrounds, walking trails, and shaded picnic areas. Paul B. Johnson State Park is an outdoor destination with a lake for swimming, boating, fishing, and camping, south of Hattiesburg.

Last but not least, Hattiesburg is home to the University of Southern Mississippi. I was a band nerd, so I can tell you this band has been an icon for longer than I can remember. The University of Southern Mississippi’s All-American Marching Band appeared in The Longest Yard in 1974. It was the first college marching band to be featured in a major motion picture.
