On the other hand, The Stone Manor Boutique Inn in Lovettsville was featured in the ‘Sleep and Sip at Virginia Inns with Wineries’. I mention this because Lovettsville is very near Harpers Ferry. Although technically in West Virginia, Harpers Ferry is only separated from Leesburg by 27 miles, a bridge, and a river. With spellbinding history, it sits at the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers.

That history comes alive at John Brown’s Fort in Harpers Ferry. It’s the most visited tourist site in West Virginia. Additionally, looking out at the view from what is now known as Jefferson’s Rock, Thomas Jefferson said it was “perhaps one of the most stupendous scenes in nature”.

Local Leesburg Past Personalities

Arthur Godfrey, the radio personality, owned a grass field on the eastern edge of town so he could use his personal DC-3. When he sold the field, he donated part of the proceeds to the town of Leesburg to help fund the new field, which is named after him.

In addition, the late General George C. Marshall also had a home here at Dodona Manor. The mansion was partially funded by donations from countries whose economies were stabilized by his plan after WWII.
