Landmarks and the Technical Part
Leesburg, Virginia (KJYO, JYO) Leesburg Executive Airport at Godfrey Field, Elevation, 389.5′ has one 5,500′ x 100′ grooved asphalt runway (17/35). This is a towered public field owned by the town of Leesburg located 3 miles south of the Leesburg Central Business District.
As the closest GA jetport to DC, and in close proximity to Dulles, it’s within the boundaries of our capital city and additionally it’s a designated reliever airport for Washington-Dulles. Therefore, it falls under SFRA protocol. (Special Flight Rules Area). Check FAA NOTAM Number 0/3929, for specifics you can go to trf.faa.gov.
Being an International Airport, 24 hour advanced reservations are required by U.S. Customs for international flights. Call 703-661-2800 (option 2).
The terminal is home to Aviation Adventures owned by Bob Hepp, a 2022 Virginia Aviation Hall of Fame Recipient! There are also four other flight schools on the field or in the terminal: Aero Elite, ATP Flight, Nova Pilots, and Open Air. Within the terminal there’s a nice pilot lounge and break area for snacks.

Leesburg is served by two FBO’s. ProJet Aviation is inside the beautiful terminal. The ladies at ProJet Aviation were very helpful and extremely knowledgeable about their full service operations. A big thank you to Courtney and Lindsey for the info. I’m not surprised that ProJet was the 2022 FBO Member of the Year. You will get first class service from 6:00a.m.-9:00p.m. Fuel and hanger space, drive up plane side access, catering and full service amenities are available. Call out fees apply after hours.
In addition, nearby, is the Kuhn Jet Center in their own modern, state of the art, and elegant hanger. Providers of service for all the details, they are pure class. Ramp services, lodging and transport arrangements are just a few of their talents. Transport
Arranging rental car service through either FBO is effortless but if you choose you can do it yourself. There are private transportation providers like Dulles Airport Taxi Cab & Sedan Service, Loudoun Yellow Cab and Falcon Cab that offer point to point transport. Reserve a ride online through their websites. ProJet works closely with Dulles Executive Sedan, Hertz and Go Rentals.
Looking for a Limo? Saferide Limo advertises reliable and always on time chauffeur service. Of coarse, the normal, Uber and Lyft, are also available.
Places to Stay in and Around Leesburg.
Throughout the area there’s no shortage of beautiful homes and rooms from Airbnb or VRBO. You can choose magnificent waterfront or rolling mountain views or historic homes tucked back in the trees. Next, the usual places such as Homewood Suites by Hilton and Hampton Inn are here plus the new HOME2 by Hilton located near the Leesburg Premium Outlets. The Salamander Resort (Middleburg) has a Forbes Five-Star spa. Loaded with historic charm it’s right at home in horse and wine country. Add in a 25 acre equestrian center, life size chess, Harrimans Grill and a massage from the spa, you won’t want to go anywhere else. Also available are tennis courts, indoor and outdoor pools, a putting green and a tree top zip line.
There’s the award winning Landsdowne Resort for golf and dinners paired with wine or the unique Stone Gables Bed & Breakfast just outside of town. As one of the last remaining gabled barns in Loudoun County, the Stone Gables B&B is steeped in history, it serves as an event space as well as a Bed & Breakfast.
On the other hand, The Stone Manor Boutique Inn in Lovettsville was featured in the ‘Sleep and Sip at Virginia Inns with Wineries’. I mention this because Lovettsville is very near Harpers Ferry. Although technically in West Virginia Harpers Ferry is only separated from Leesburg by 27 miles, a bridge and a river. With spellbinding history it sits at the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers.
That history comes alive at John Brown’s Fort in Harpers Ferry. It’s the most visited tourist site in West Virginia. Additionally, Looking out at the view from what is now known as Jefferson’s Rock, Thomas Jefferson said it was “perhaps one of the most stupendous scenes in nature”.

Looking for a couples night out? Start at Tuscarora Mill add their full bar, Virginia wines, and decent prices, it’s a hit! Another adult friendly evening would be The Wine Kitchen with unusual wines pairings. Harrimans Grill in the Salamander Resort hosts private chef’s dinners in their cooking studio.
Want casual? Try Firebirds Wood Fired Grill, or Melt Gourmet Cheeseburgers for the best burgers in town.
Sightseeing in the area? There is a small group walking tour of historic Leesburg is you’re a history buff. Similarly, if you’re out near Purcellville look up the European inspired BIA Kitchen, it’s worth the drive.
For kid friendly dining check out FireWorks Pizza, Blue Ridge Grill, as well as the Cowbell Kitchen. The Cowbell Kitchen features locally grown and produced homemade deliciousness. Trungo’s is a local Leesburg BBQ favorite with Big Band and Irish Jam sessions while The Branch is in the bowling Alley. Just in case you have youngsters who need to get rid of some energy while you have a burger.
Where to Wine and Other Nearby Things to Do!
Zephaniah Farm Vineyard seems to be a favorite in Leesburg as is the Stone Tower Winery. Also mentioned was Willowcroft Farm Winery where you can experience grape pruning. Highly recommended is the Casanel Vineyards and Winery and the Dry Mill Vineyards and Winery. In conclusion, the simple elegance of the Vineyards & Winery at Lost Creek deserves a mention. They have an all-inclusive venue in the Harvest House at Lost Creek as well as a downtown venue, the Echelon Wine Bar.
Looking for something a little out of the ordinary? Without a doubt, check out the Capital Hive Meadery where they make?? You guessed it, actual mead. Additionally, it’s right across the street from the airport. BONUS! Another bonus within walking distance of the airport is a very nice little coffee shop just across the road, SR Coffee.

Local Leesburg Past Personalities
Arthur Godfrey, the radio personality, owned a grass field on the eastern edge of town so he could use his personal DC-3. When he sold the field he donated part of the proceeds to the town of Leesburg to help fund the new field which is named after him.
In addition, the late General George C. Marshall also had a home here at Dodona Manor. The mansion was partially funded by donations from countries whose economies where stabilized by his plan after WWII.
